Julia Kendell, National Home Improvement Show expert, presenter of BBC1's DIY SOS and interior designer provides advice on making a good first impression on your home.
Areas we use a lot in the home can get worn over time or we often tire of them. We also let small things such as garden maintenance and clutter pile up and get out of hand.
In many cases moving is not an option and in these instances, there are a number of small inexpensive home improvements which can freshen up the home, making the room cleaner and brighter and also creating space at the same time.
One cost saving tip all savvy home-improvers should start with is to de-clutter. Clutter creates chaos making the room appear congested. To open out the space, empty the area and put back only what is needed or loved. Personally, I would clear out bedraggled houseplants, particularly orchids that finished flowering months ago.
Another inexpensive, hassle-free and quick home improvement is to freshen up the room with paint. You’ll be surprised at the transformation, making your room cleaner and brighter.
You can also add a bit of personality with the creation of a new focal point. For a dramatic impression, you could create a feature wall with striking wallpaper; this is a fabulous inexpensive method of adding flair to a room.
The National Home Improvement Show will be the UK’s largest event for people looking to add space and value to their home, will provide visitors with the resources to access advice and support through its exhibitors, live expert forums and practical how to sessions.
As well as presenting in the Real Homes Live! Theatre and Master classes, our own experts Michael Holmes, Julia Kendell, Matt James and Charlie Luxton will be on hand for a drop-in style clinic throughout the show. They can answer all your individual home improvement questions on their specialist area of expertise – whether you need advice on interior design, building, landscape gardening, ecovation or even DIY - they will be there to help. Where else could you get this advice for no additional cost! Bring along your plans and find out how they would enhance your project.
The National Home Improvement Show will be held at London's Earls Court from the 1-3 October 2010.
