CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is counting down the days until its premier event, the Great British Beer Festival, at Earls Court, London, kicks off on Tuesday August 3rd!
The Festival is the biggest event of its kind in the UK. Last year, a staggering 64,000 people attended Earls Court over the 5 days, sampling over 500 different real ales, ciders and perries.
This year CAMRA expects to be no different, and with a similarly high number of beers on show, the Great British Beer Festival retains its billing as the ‘World’s Biggest Pub’.
As well as boasting the best real brews, CAMRA’s designated cider and perry bar will also cater for the discerning drinker, with a selection of over 100 different varieties from all over the UK.
Meanwhile, on the foreign beer bar this year, to cater for the increasing consumer demand for American craft beers, CAMRA has increased its allocation of beers from the United States by 50%.
Aside from the heady selection of real ales, ciders and perries, there will be a fantastic live music line-up, a diverse array of catering options including traditional pub snacks, classic pub games, and the chance to join a beer expert on a tutored tasting. This year, renowned experts Roger Protz, Melissa Cole, Jeff Evans, Christine Cryne and a ‘Meet the Brewer’ session hosted by the Society of Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) complete the line-up.
For beer lovers across the UK, the opening day at the Festival (Tuesday August 3rd) is when the nation’s most prestigious real ale award, the Champion Beer of Britain finals, takes place. After a year of local and regional judging heats, who will walk away with the title of ‘Best Beer in Britain’? In 2009, the Rudgate brewery of York picked up the accolade after its Ruby Mild beer impressed the panel of final judges.
For all serious Festival revellers, on Thursday August 5th, ‘Hat Day’ will once again take place, and CAMRA is looking forward to seeing the imagination and flair of attendees! ‘Hat Day’ in 2010 is celebrating its 5th birthday.
Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive, spoke in anticipation of this year’s Festival. He said:
‘There’s a real excitement surrounding the Festival this year, as ticket sales have increased, many new breweries have opened up across the UK in the past 12 months, and more consumers are discovering the infinite amount of variety in the real ale industry at present. The Festival is an important tool for promoting great British beer, and we welcome both beer novices and experts alike to come together at Earls Court this August.’
